At the Police Court to-day a prisoner, Joseph Norman, was charged with the attempted murder of the gaoler, Alexander Armstrong. In the course of his evidence Mr. Armstrong stated that on the morning of the 20th November accused Avas engaged in the carpenter’s shop at the prison. When Avituess entered the shop accused Avas making a drawing on a piece of Avood. Witness passed by and entered into conversation Avitli the officer in charge. While they Averc looking at the partly-finished Avork, witness received a heavy liloav on the right side of the neck, and subsequently discovered that he-had been wounded. The medical evidence Avas to the effect .that the Avound was a serious one. Had it been half an inch further to the front it must luia-c been fatal. A chisel could have caused the injury. Accused said that all lie had done he had done becaus;e of the had treatment. He was committed for trial.
