THE COUNTRY ENVELOPED. A SERIOUS POSITION. -United Press Association. Copyright VANCOUVER. August 5. Tho whole of the Kootenay country awnv from the railway lines is a seething mass of flames. The ruins of Fernio nro still smouldering. The flames threaten the town of Michel, around which bush Arcs are raging. Tho Kootenay Valley mining and smelting operations have been crippled, and 10,000 people are workless. Unless help is forthcoming many children must die. Thousands of dollars arc being subscribed in Canada aud the United States. A GRAVE DANGER. TOWNS THREATENED. United Press Association, Copyright (Received August 6, 11.45 p.m.) VANCOUVER, August 6. All the mines in the Crow’s Nest region have been shut down, and relavs of miners are fighting the bush fires.
Many of the inhabitants of Fernie are seeking refuge. The Canadian Pacific Railway Co.'s coke ovens at Michael are ablaze. The town of Coal Creek,where there are 1500 people, is also threatened by the fire, which is within three miles, nnd cuts off escape by the west, except for two Indian trails over the mountains, and these are impossible for women and children to traverse.
