The first of the season’s home and home matches between Southland and Otago was played to-day, when Southland won by 12 points to 11. The first spell was very evenly contested. Otago scored two tries, while Southland scored a try and kicked a penalty goal. In the second spell Southland forwards outplayed the visitors, and the local backs were attacking all the time. Southland scored two more tries, and lost several chances. Near the end of the game a. bad miss on the part of the Southland backs let the Otago forwards away. They dribbled over the line and scored beside the posts, the try being converted. The Otago team was considered very weak, and Soiitliland’s win being such a narrow one is not considered a good augury for the coming northern tour of the Southlanders, especially as Glasgow and Stead (tlieir mainstays )will not be available for the trip. The Otago 6corers were Dougherty, Bennett, and Williams. THE RANFURLY SHIELD. MATCHES AT AUCKLAND. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, August 5. Tlie Auckland Rugby Union received nn intimation to-night from the Wellington Rugby Union that the representative team to play Auckland would leave Wellington on August 12th, arriving in Auckland the following day. Owing t 0 injuries, Morse and Bater will be unable to play for Auckland next Saturday, tlieir places being filled by AVindcr and Coote. THE BRITISH TEAM. DEFEATS NEW SOUTH WALES. Dnited Press Association. Copyright (Received August 5, 9.15 p.m.) . SYDNEY August 5. To-day New South AVales met the British team. Tho game was played in mud inches deep, with occasional heavy rain squalls throughout the afternoon, and after the first few minutes it was almost impossible to distinguish one team from the other. The ‘British forwards packed splendidly, and came through the local team like a wedge; Half-way through the first spell, the hall was kicked over the AA r elsli line, and Morgan racing several of the local men, dived on the ball and secured a try. The angle was difficult, and Harding faded to add the major points. The Britishers were too powerful in the scrums for the AVelsbmen, and continually broke through. Only twice did New .South AVales in the first half approach close to the British line. In the second spell the game was -stubbornly contested. The Welsh backs saved frequently. It was an exciting moment when the Britishers were penalised right in front of tlieir goal, but 'Bede Smith made a poor kick, and New South AVales bad no further chance to score, Britain winning by 3 points to nil.
