CHALLENGE SHIELD. (Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 11. At a meeting-of tlie New Zealand Cricket Council to-night, tlie proposed rules relating to the challenge (shield presented by Air. Heatlicote Williams, of Hawke’s Bay, wero adopted, the principal rules being as follows: The shield t-o ho known as. the Heathcoto Williams Challenge Shield, and to he open for competition amongst all schools throughout- New Zealand. The New Zo.aland Cricket Council to allot the shield to the school being the winner of a tournament to be liekl at Christchurch during the season 19089. such school to hold .the shield subject to the rigli-t of -challenge by any other school. Any school meeting tho holder of the shield in the course of its ordinary Association or school matches. to have the right to declare beforehand to tho New Zealand Cricket Council and to the school holding the shield that such match should also lie a challenge match, provided such match be played to a finish. All challenge matches to he played on a suitable ground within the district in which the school holding the shield was, or by consent on a ground to lie roamed by the Council. Any school desiring to play a challenge match with the holder to give notice to tjje New Zealand Cricket Council
of such desire not later than tlio end Of November in each'year. In tlio event of several challenges tlio New Zealand Cricket Council to have tho right to declare which, il any, of tho challenge matches shall lie allowed. At tlio same mooting strong opinion was expressed that the Council, should socodo from tlio Now Zealand Sports Federation.
