DARING BURGLARY.

FAAIOUS PICTURE STOLEN. (Press Association.) AVELLINGTON, April T 3. The local Art Gallery was burgled between 5.30 on Saturday and 2.30 yesterday afternoon, and .a • famous landscape painting by R. AY. Lead?r, R.A., stolen. The painting, which represents an English landscape (a view from Surrey hills), was on a canvas of about- 4ft by sft, and was safe when tho gallery was closed on Saturday. Yesterday the frame was discovered in the anteroom, with a dark lantern, jemmy, and other burglars’ tools -lying around. The picture Was brought to New Zealand by Air A. Longdon with other English works of art for the recent New Zealand exhibition, and subsequently purchased by Airs AA\ B. Rhodes, of -AVellington, for about £OOO and presented to the local gallery.
