(Special to "Times.”) WELLINGTON, April 13. GOVERNMENT’S LAND POLICY On the subject of the Government's land policy, Air. Massey says the first estate purchased by the Government under tho new Taxing Act was the Ivewi estate, and not a single application has yet been received for it. Thero is, lie states, no parallel between that estate or tho Otek-aike and Culverden estates in the South Island; The last-named arc fit for cropping at once but the ono at Auckland will require years of work before it roaches that stage. A DISTINGUISHED PRESENTATION. Lord Roberts has forwarded to the Education Department a handsome volume of his “Life in India” for presentation to Air. McAlahon, late of the Terraco school, who mado tho highest score in the Dominion in tbo shooting match against the British School Guild. THE SERVANT PROBLEM. The Labor Department received many applications from ladies anxious to engage the domestic servants who arrive by tho Tongariro. Some of the girls came out under engagement, and tho others have gone to friends, so that tho Department can do nothing for the distracted mistresses. Quito a number of people here have given up housekeeping and are living in hotels and hoarding houses on account of the servant difficulty. STOCK EXCHANGE. On exchange yesterday sales were restricted to tho mining section. Talismans were accepted at £2 13s 3d, and Big River ex dividends at 18s.
