THE RABBIT WAR.

INCREASE IN. HAWKE’S BAY. POLLARD POISONING INVALUABLE. Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 1. Tho rabbit pest in New Zealand, although not nearly so serious as it was a few years ago, is still a matter which the Government . authorities cannot afford to treat lightly. The Chief Inspector of Stock (Mr. E. Clifton), who is in a better position to know the actual state of affairs than any other official, informed a- “Post” reporter to-day 'that whilst there basnet been a' very appreciable increase of late in the number of rabbits throughout the- Dominion, it is, nevertheless, a fact that the area infected has been spreading in the Hawke’s Bay district. The Rabbit Board is waging war against the pest with success, and, in other parts of the Dominion, .the efforts, of the stock inspectors in that direction are also proving successful. The use of the pliosphorised pollard has proved invaluable in checking an increase. Mr. Clifton does not hold out any hope that the pest will ever be absolutely exterminated, but he is confident thatthere wil bo no need to fear that New Zealand will suffer as much from tho depredations of the rabbits as it lias done in the past.
