CRUELTY TO A .HORSE.
A" DISGUSTING CASE. • 1 ! Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 31. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Andrew Purvis pleaded not guilty to working a horse while it was suffering from open sores. Evidence showed that the man hired the animal in good condition, and that it was now in a verv bad state. The Magistrate‘inspected the animal, and stated there was no doubt it was a case of cruelty. Defendant would be fined £5. and costs, in default one month. Defendant: “I’ll take v the month, sir. Thanks.” Thos. Coulter, Islington, at the instance of Alex. Macplierson, stock inspector, was charged with feeding swine on unboiled offal, of carrying nightsoil in a milk-cart, a.nd with wilfully leaving offal about with-; in half a mile of the highway. After hearing particulars of the offences, the Magistrate remarked that he could not imagine anything more filthy than the second charge, and it made one feel almost ill. It would be impossible for him to pass over it. On this chatrge defendant would he fined £lO and costsy for feeding pigs on offal without boiling it, 40s and costs; and on the last charge 10s and costs. A week would bp allowed m which to pay the fines.
