DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER.
GOVERNMENT COULD GIVE NO PLEDGES.
NAPIER, March 30. Tbo Premier passed through hero to-day on his way to Wellington., and while ashore received a deputation of members of the Namier Chumber of Commerce and leading . business men, who asked that during the next session of Parliament a sum of money should be placed on the estimates for tbo purpose of having a survey completed and tho best available route selected for a railway between Napier and Gisborne, with estimates of tho probable cost of tho line, and that in the following session, when the question ot new railway works was being dealt with by the Government, tho claims of the East Coast should receive favorable consideration. file Premier, in reply, said the request ol the deputation for the completion of tho survey was reasonable, and would receive every consideration. With regard to new railways, or for the extension of the existing lines when probable, lie could only say that the Government had given no pledges with regard to any of these, and could give none now, but would be guided entirely by what they thought was in the best Interests of the settlers, irrespective of political considerations, and every district in the Dominion would be treated as fairly as possible. % .
