THE KING AT MASS.
“For tho first time in 220 years (says the London “Morning Post” of February 14) a British Sovereign has, within liis own dominions, attended a celebration of tlie Roman mass. But the days of Edward VII. are not as those of James 11. Needless to say, our gracious King’s presence on Saturday at the solemn Requiem for a. brother-sovereign, and his own intimate friend, was purely a tribute of sympathy and respect for the departed, such as is nowadays universally customary.” The council of-tlio Protestant Alliance b.avo passed .a resolution protesting against the King’s attendance at a Requiem .Mass .for.the late ■ King of Portugal at tlih'lßoman Catholic Church, Spanish Place. “AA’hile deeply sv.mnathising with the Portuguese nation in their .great sorrow, the Protestant Alliance humbly points out to his .MaJesty that, by Act of Parliament, 1689, ‘all and every person and persons that is, are', or shall be, reconciled to, or shall hold communion with the See or Church or Rome, shall ho excluded, and he for ever inclinable to inherit, possess, or - enjoy the" Crown and Government of this realm, and the people of these realms' shall be, -and are hereby, absolved of tlieir allegiance.”
