LICENSING COMMITTEE.
QUARTERLY AIEETING
The quarterly meeting of the Waiapu Licensing Committee was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs W. A. Barton, S.M. (in the chair), J. Somervell and G. Darton. THE TOAVN HOTELS. Sergeant Williams reported that the conduct of the hotels in Gisborne and district had been generally good. On December 10th the licensee of the Record Reign Hotel was charged with supplying liquor to an intoxicated person and with permitting drunkenness on his licensed premises, but both informations were dismissed. TE KARAKA.
Constable Doyle reported that the additions to the Ormond Hotel were well in hand, and that they would be open to the public in about a month. Fencing required at Waerenga-a-liika Hotel had still to be erected. He had nothing to report regarding the Patutahi, Kaitarataki, Rangatira, Te Karaka, and Wliatatutu Oil Springs Hotels, and the Motu Accommodation House. PORT AWANUI. Constable Wales reported that he had received complaints as to Sunday and after-hour trading at the Te Rahui Hotel. He had nothing unfavorable to report regarding the hotels at Te Araroa and Port Awanui.. The Clerk said notice had been served on the licensee of the Te Rahui Hotel. The Chairman said ho had received numerous complaints from the public as to the conduct of the hotel. If this state of things the licensee would probably find himself in serious trouble at the annual meeting of the Committee. Mr A. W. Rees said he would draw the licensee’s attention to the report. WAIPIRO BAY. Constable Bevan reported that he visited Tokomaru on February sth in connection with the Maori races which took place there on that date, and had to caution the licensee of the Te Puka Hotel in connection with drunkenness among Maoris in the bar, and passages. He and the Native Constable had to be continually in the house during the afternoon, stopping fights, etc. As a result he laid eight informations for drunkenness (seven against Natives) and four charges-of threatening behaviour. He was also reporting a case of serving liquor to an intoxicated person. The Chairman said the state of things disclosed in the report was very unsatisfactory. Perhaps little had better be said on the matter as it would again come before the committee at an early date. Mr. Nolan .said that the licensee stated that only one native had been troublesome on the date of the sports. The licensee took great care that the house was 'kept quiet during tho sports. As to tho informations laid, '.hey were not the result of drinking at the Te Rahui Hotel. TOLAGA BAY. Constable Kirby reported that the Pakarae Hotel was being conducted satisfactorily. The premises now in uso wero about to be demolished, and a contract had been let for a new building, to be completed in May. The temporary premises of the Tolaga Bay Hotel were being conducted in a satisfactory manner, and the best that could be done was being done for the travelling public. RENEWAL POSTPONED. On the application of Mr. Nolan, the renewal of the license of the Ormond Hotel was adjourned until April 24th, pending the completion of the new building. RE-BUILDING' TIME EXTENDED. An extension till June 4th was granted in the time for the re-build-ing of the Tolaga Bay Hotel. TRANSFERS GRANTED. Transfers wer granted as follows: Oeorge P. Priestly (Waerenga-a-liika Hotel) to Albert Pritchard (Air. F. W. Nolan); executrix of the late Janies Wallace (Turanganui Hotel) to Susan Wallace (Air. Nolan); John AValsli (Tiniroto) to J. S. Cooper (Air Nolan).
