THE TRENTHAM MEETING. RAIN INTERFERES WITH THE SHOOTING. Press Association. TRENTHAM RANGE, March 5. Tho Defence Forces Riflo Association meeting opened this morning, with 504 entries, constituting a record. The weather was unfavorable tor shooting, there being intermittent showers all day. In addressing the competitors previous to the start of tho shooting, Colonel Collins said that in consideration of the large entries, the Council decided to place a Consolation Match of £IOO on the programme for men who had not won £1 or over at the meeting. He also announced that tin* match, Volunteers v. Rifle Clubs, would be a straight-out'team match, instead of taking .aggregates. The Council decided to supplement the Gilmers prize by £2O, and the ivin11ino- team would also take thr Crawford Shield and the bee-Enfield rifle for the highest scorer. Tho shooting started with the 200 yards Volunteer v.Rifle Chili matches, which wore fired concurrently. There, was a puffy wind and heavy showers during the firing, and only three possibles were made—Private Jackson (Wellington), Private C. Tronson (Napier), and Moyer (Hikaranga)— and six 34’s, but there were a large number of 33’s. j At the 600yds tho showers .continued and the result was mediocre shoot- | mg. Breingan started well in tho Auckland Match, with 31 at 200 yards. Rait scored 32. Tho rain is playing havoc with some of Now Zealand’s crack shots.
