NELSON, Jan. 12. Some excitement was caused yesterday by a. report that gold had been discovered on tho mud Hut- along tho water front. It appears that a party of Corporation laborers who were laying the outfall sewage main found traces of gold 1 in the excavations. They temporarily abandoned their work and made several “wash-ups with encouraging results. The nows quickly spread, and the discoverers were soon joined by several others. During the day the Commissioner ol Crown Lands issued licenses for ono or .two claims, which were duly pegged out, the holder of one of the largest being a neighboring M.P. A hoax is now suspected. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 12. On Friday night a daring burglary took place at the residence of Mr. T. Wallace, Aikinan’s-road, St. Alban’s. The inmates had just gone into the gardvn for a few minutes, aud on returning they found that the house had been ransacked and some money and a lot of valuable jewellery had Ijeen stolen. WANGANUI, Jan. 12. A fire occurred at Mr. Watson’s house of 18 rooms connected with the Collegiate School on Saturday afternoon. The upstairs portion was gutted. A large amount of furniture and valuables was saved, but a quantity of personal effects, including a valuable collection of Japanese goods, were destroyed. Tlie building was insured for £IOOO in the Standard office and the furniture for £6OO in tho N.Z. office. The damage to tho building is estimated at £3OO and to tho furniture at £2OO. DANNEVIRKE, Jan, 11. The Waioue correspondent of tiio Daily Press wires that groat damage has been done by bush fires on Friday night. Peck’s house was destroyed early this morning., A son of McHardy was awakened by the window of his .room falling m, and McHardy and his family had to make a hasty retreat in their night-clothes. The house, which contained seven rooms, was destroyed. The bush tires extend right from Waioue to Pongaroa, and it is dangerous to travel in the district. Settlers around Waioue township are fighting the fires. . * This morning a young milt named Hill, while lifting a stump witli a jack, sustained serious injuries. I‘ho jack slipped and the stump foil on him, and badly crushed him. Ho was conveyed to the hospital, where lie is doing as well as possible. DUNEDIN, Jan. 12. Yesterday a station hand named Wm. Hallorau, employed at Boyd’' station, near Outram, attempted to suicide by cutting his throat. lie was brougth into tlie Dunedin Hospital where lie lies in a very low state. A boating fatality occurred in tho upper harbor to-day. A yaclit occupied by two men named Rush and Thomas Smith was sailing opposite to Waverley .about noon when a squall struck the boat, which capsized. Both men were thrown into the water. Rush managed to make his way ashore, but Smith went down. The body lias not yet been found. Deceased was a single man, 25 years of age.
