WELLINGTON, January 11. A heavy shipment of Island fruit arrived by the Manapouri. Ten thousand eases and bunches have been put ashore. A very minute inspection of the fruit has been made by the Biological Department-. Largo quantities of fruit and tomatoes are being imported from Motueka and Nelson respectively. A line of new apples from Nelson was condemned by one of the Inspectors after it was sold, as it was found to be infested with codlin moth. A line of Sydney pears infested with fly maggot lias also been condemned. Generally, however, oversea shippers are exercising more case than formerly. A new feature of the fruit trado here is the presence of tlic street barrow men. Formerly the Wellington fruit trade was almost entirely in the hands of Chinamen. Now the barrow-man is cutting into the trade of the bland hut tricky Mongol, who never by any chance seems to sell you such nice fruit as he lias in bis window; but if you liavo to watch the Chinaman for quality you have to occasionally watch the barrow-man for weight,
