Jones was unable to come to Adelaide. Hayes, Blythe, and Young were also left out., Roy llill was Australia’s twelfth man. Noble won the toss. He and Trumpet- began the innings on a perfect wicket. Trumper was almost speechless with a heavy cold. Noble began Mitli a square-leg hit to tlio bou-darv off Fielder. Trumper .snicked Bnrlies’ first bull for three. Two overs yielded 11. In Fielder’s second over Trumper tried the leg-glanco and was bowled off his pads. Clem Hill having a severe cold was kept back in tho hope of not being wanted till Saturday. '.Macartney wis promoted, and sot to business with tho confidence of n veteran, and runs came rapidly. At 35 Noble was out to a ball from Barnes sent straight to Hutchings at second slip. McAlister opened with extreme caution. Macartney with a pretty 4 off Fielder made tho total 50 for 55 .minutes’ play. Tlio fielding was close and accurate, and kept down the runs. There was a double change of bowling to Crawford and Rhodes, and runs came faster, Macartney twice in one over cutting Rhodes to tho boundary. McAlister took 35 minutes to reach double figures. At tlio lunch adjournment the score was two for 79 —Macartney 40, McAlister 10. When the game urns resumed Fielder and Barnes howled, and 10 overs productW oulj' r 13 runs.' Rhodes relieved Fielder at 92, hut the batsmen scored off him. The century was reached nftor t hour 59 minutes. Crawford relieved Barnes, and 106 was recorded in liis second over, when McAlister was caught at second slip. McAlister batted 93 minutes. Armstrong was cautious. Braund relieved Rhodes at 130. At 140 he got Macartney leg before. Tho Sydney midget batted flawlessly for 1 hour 53 minutes. He hit nine fours, and did not give a "chance. Ransford began vigorously. At 160 Armstrong was caught at- short slip. Hill batted steadily, but Ransford punished Fielder and Barnes. At the tea adjournment the score stood—Ransford 32. Hill 2—total 182. Fielder and Barnes were the howlers after tea. Ransford drove the former to tho boundary. With tlio total at 191 Hill tried to smother a good length ball from Barnes, and was caught at the wicket. Hartigan opened with a singlo off Barnes. With all the Australian champion batsmen out, the Englishmen, who had worked most energoticall- all day, set to work with redoubled vigor. Their bowling was accurate, and tlio fielding was brilliant in tho extreme. Hartigan with a couple of braces off Barnes to leg brought up 200, which had occupied 204 minutes. Hartigin at 6 liad a narrow escape, as he glanced' a ball from Fielder just over the heads of tlio slip.s. The next ball he drove for 4. With 215 up Ransford in trying to glance Barlies was bowled. He played delightfully crisp cricket, scoring all around tlio wicket. He batted 63 .minutes and hit six fourers. Carter joined Hartigan. Rhodes and Braund were tried with the ball. Hartigan batting stylishly scored at a fair rate. Carter took 25 minutes to reach 10. Then Rhodes handed the ball to Crawford. At 246 Carter got 4 off each bowler, and 250 went up for 252 minutes’ play. Hartigan reached 40 bv square-cutting Crawford to the boundary. He drove tlio next ball for 4. Fielder relieved Braund at 267. In his first over Carter, when 23, snicked the ball high, 'and Braund, jumping, got it on the tips of his fingers, but could not bold it. At 273 Hutchings went on- at Crawford’s end, and got Carter lbw with his fifth ball. The first ball of Fielder’s next over bowled Hartigan. Tlio Queenslander played a splendid dashing innings of 75 minutes without a chance. ,Ho hit six fourers. O’Connor and Saunders played out time.
