SCENIC SPLENDORS.
NORTHERN THERMAL REGION. NEW ROUTE WANTED. Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 27. In the course of a conversation today the Hon. J. G. Findlay, Minister for Internal Affairs, referred to the matter of improving the journey between Auckland and Wellington, via Taupo. “I think,” he said, “that we will some day have to consider the desirability of connecting Tokaanu with the Main Trunk railway. The distance is not very great, and the mad could very easily be made. That will enable people from Auckland to go through the thermal region down to Tanpo and Tokaanu and cross to the Main Trunk, and thence on to Wellington, either direct or by way of tlie .Wanganui River, instead of having to face a iong coach journey or to go back on- their tracks as at present. The whole distance from Tokaanu through Raurimu would not he more than 20 miles. The route would enable people to sec the wonders of Wairakei and Taupo while on their way to Wellington within a reasonable time.” Dr. Findlay spoke enthusiastically of the beauties of Wairakei and Taupo, and said that tho combination of the Geyser and the W’airoa Valley, the Hiika Falls, and the Aratiatia Rapids was unsurpassed in the thermal region.
