EAST COAST RAILWAY.
OPENING OF ANOTHER SECTION URGED. A meeting of tho East Coast Railway League was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Borough Council Chambers. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Townley), and Messrs. A. F. Matthews, Peryer, Devery, Simson, Matthewson, McPhail, Gaudin, AYliinray, and Bright. Apologies for 11011-at-tendance. were received from a number ol' gentlemen, including Messrs. C. A. do Lautour and AV. L. Rees. Correspondence was received from the Under-Secretary of Public AVorks, stating that a tender had been accepted for the AVaikoliu bridgo and that the work would be commenced without delay. The Chairman in a .(few words stated the .object of the meeting, which was to urge upon the Government the desirability of completing and opening a further section of the Gisborne-Mutu railway to the AA'illows Crossing. He concluded by moving:—“That the East Coast Railway League would respectively urge upon tho -Government the great necesity there is for the ballasting and completion of the railway from Puha for further traffic to the AVillows Crossing, a distance of three miles. By so doing, they will enable upcountry’ settlers to take the train at t'he AVd’.lows Crossing and this convenienco wild bo greatly appreciated, and bo the means of opening tho :G.isborne-Motu-Opotiki line a. further distance of three miles.” Mr. A. F. Matthews seconded the resolution and pointed out that as tho propsed line would go through a largo area occupied by Crown tenants it was clearly the duty. of tho Government to assist them in conveying their products to the port. Messrs. Bright and Wiiinray also spoke in support of the resolution, the latter gentleman stating that in .his opinion tho llinc was of more importance than the Ma«hi Trunk It was further decided that a copy of the resolution be forwared to the Premier, tbc Hon. Jas. Carroll, and the Minster for Railways. Acting on a suggestion by the Chairman, the meeting decided to send a message of congratulation to the Premier 5 wishing him success for the New Year and also that next Christmas would see tlie line completed as far as Motu.
