IS HOP BEER INTOXICATING?
Press Association. OAMARU, Dec. 10. Oainaru is a no-licens© district, and a case of some importance was heard before the Magistrate. The police brought changes against several persons for selling hop bee.i, manufactured locally, the s'ame being held to be •intoxicating. The liquor was analysed by 1 roiessm- Bickerton, who said the beer contained 2.45 per cent, of pure alcohol, equal to 5.39 per cent, of proof spirit. Porter contained .2./J cf alcoliol and 8.13 of proof spirit. Professor Bickerton, it was pointed out by defendants, had lii.ter slightly modified these figures. The evidence for the defence was to the effect that liquor comtainimg even 3 ner cent, of alcohol was not intoxicating. Two medical men, and Mr Thomson, analyst and lecturer in materia medica in Dunedin, gave evidence to this, effect, all four agreeing in the main. The Magistrate, owing to the conflicting evidence, dismissed the case, hut the prosecution gave notice ot an appeal to the Supreme Court tor a ruling, inasmuch as tlio Jtmglism law (there being nono in New Zealand) fixed the minimum at 2 per cent, of alcohol, over which duty hud to bo paid.
