Air. A. Donald, local representative of -the Labor Department, has been notified of his appointment as scaffolding inspector for Cook County. As 'Air. Donald was a practical builder in Wellington province for 30 years previous to entering the Labor Department, lie should be particularly fitted for the position Air. J. Cannon showed slight improvement last night. Dr. Do Clive Lowe, who is to make an examination of Air. Cannon by means of a Rontgen rays apparatus, is_ expected to arrive from Auckland to-morrow. Captain and Airs. Tomblesbn are expected to arrive back from Auckland to-morrow. A pleasant little function eventuated at the “Gisborne Times” office yesterday afternoon, when the staff assembled to make a present a tipn to Alias .Aluy Johnston, who has severed her connection with the office, after a service of about two years on.the ■staff. The presentation, which took the form of a silver-mounted manicure set and a .set of afternoon teaspoons, was handed to the recipient by Air. E. A. Alois, accountant, uvitli whose department Aliss Johnston was associated, and representatives of the literary_;aml other departments joined in voicing the great esteem in which Aliss Johnston was held. The speakers, whilst expressing regret at her severance from the “Times,” conveyed to Aliss Johnston their best wishes for her future happiness and prosperity. Air. AI. Nasmith, as senior member of the staff in regard to length of service, made a neat speech iii replying on the recipient’s behalf.
