Local timber merchants have .been notified of ■:! further rise in the pi icc of timber and joinery, the northern mills having again advanced ,juices. The rise is said to be necessary because ol* tho increases, in Lbe cost of production and in freight charges. Locally building timbers and joinery .will ho raised from is 6d to 3s per hundred feet. The Volunteer Drillslied Trustees were yesterday informed by the secretary of the [Defence Council that in 'addition to the £llOO previously paid bv the [Government for a site, £‘2900 bad [been placed on the 'Supplementary Estimates for budding, a drillslied. Plans for tke building, •with a clear floor space of 100 ft by 125 ft, estimated to cost £IOOO, have been approved by tho authorities, and the trustees are now in a position to proceed with the erection of tho new building. The site of the new building is on the Ormond-road, near tho AVliataupoko bridge. Tho Sunday School Anniversary services to-morrow are to bo held in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, morning, afternoon, and evening. Tho Rev. ill. AV. Walker will conduct the morning service at 11 o’clock, and the pastor, the 11 ev. Win. Grant, the afternoon and evening services. A special invitation is extended to parents and children for the morning and afternoon. In tho evening llr. Grant will deal with a subject which should have a special interest for young people, and more particularly for young men. Air. Hookey has been training a choir of children for some 'time past, and with the assistance of the church choir and a full orchestra the musicabpart of the service promises to be a great treat. At the half-yearly meeting of the Lodge Turanganui, U.A.0.D., held recently, a profit of £251 0s 3d for the half-year was shown, making the total cash balance £3520 2s 9d.
