Tho criminal sittings of the Supreme Court opened to-day. Judge Williams, in charging the Grand Jury, commented on the absence of serious crime. Albert Middleditch, charged with indecently assaulting a girl of tender years, was acquitted. At the Supreme Court to-day Alexander Ramsay, was charged on seven with tho theft of moneys, aggregating £ls 19s, collected by him at Milton, under circumstances requiring him to account for same to Messrs. Willson, Fraser, and Co., bicycle agents, Invercargill. The case was not finished when the Court rose.
NELSON, Nov. 25. In the Supreme Court a writ, has been issued by John Hayes, engineer, mine manager for the Puponga Coal and Gold Mining Company, claiming £775, balance of salary alleged to be owing.
WELLINGTON, Nov. 25. At the Supreme Court to-day William Josoph Lowe and John Cornelius Robinson were each sentenced to threo years’ imprisonment on a charge of assault and robbery at Feilding. A decree absolute was made by Mr. Justice Button in tlio divorce case, Slade v. Slade, husband’s petition. James McCallion pleaded not guilty to a charge, of having attempted •to murder James Jackson Smith at Wellington on October 30th. Accused was found guilty of common assault, and remanded for sentence. Waka Waka Hepere, a Maori, aged fifteen years, charged with having criminally assaulted a European girl aged fifteen years, was found guilty of an indecent assault, and remanded for •sentence. •
In the Bankruptcy Court to-day St. George Edward Dowsing applied for his discharge. Bankrupt, who is employed in the Land and Income Tax Department, admitted that lie had filed in order to escape payment of costs granted in an undefended case brought against him by a creditor for slander. ' Bankrupt considered that lie and not- tho creditor was the injured party. His Honor said he could not grant an unconditional discharge, and ordered bankrupt to pay £25 within twelve, months, payment to be made in quarterly instalments.
