COMMERCIAL.
Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 21. The first wool sale of the series began to-day. There were plenty of buyers present, but evidently they had a limit. Prices were much lower than last series, and consequently there was a drop all xou.nd of about twopence, sellers thus meeting a bad market. The total entry was 5500 bales, about 3000 less than last year, the falling off being caused by the late spring .and comparative shortness of grass, making stockowners disinclined to shear early in. the season. The bulk of the wool was in good condition, but that from the wiuter-turniped sheep was- earthy. The sale as a whole was disappointing. Apparently the buyers’’’ limit was between 10)d and lid for best wool, and' beyond .this price they would not go, except for special quality. Tlio highest , price for the day was 13d for a line of eleven bales superior half-bred hogget wool. Prices ranged: Merino, medium to good 9ld to 103 d; half'bred, super lid, to 13d, medium to good 9d to 10id, inferior 73d to 83; three-quar-ter-bred, super 93 d to 103, medium to good Bid to 9d, inferior 7d to Bd, crossbred super 9d to 10Jd, medium to good 73d to 83d, inferior 7d to 7',d ; longwool, sillier 8d to 9d; Down wool, super lOd to llid, medium 9.Sd to 93d.
