TARAWERA’S LATE ARRIVAL.

Tho late arrival of the s.s. Tiarawera caused a good deal of inconvenience last evening. The vessel was reported as having passed the Gape at 3.15, so that her arrival was looked for about 9.15. Accordingly the launch put off at 9 o’clock with the outward passengers, but all on board had a long vigil until after 11 o’clock (beguiled by cruising about outside) before tho Ta raw era put in an appearance. The captain explained that very thick weather bad been experienced from Auckland, tile conditions down tho coast causing a delay of two hours from the Gape. Ho found it very difficult to pick up the Gisborne leading lights, such was the haze encountered. The passengers on the launch boarded the Turawera, glad to move off itlie launch alter tho long wait, though there was .nothing to he gained in the matter of timo by embarking, as the vessel will not get under way until 6 o’clock tills morning, there being 70 tons of f cargo to handle at daylight. Inward passengers were landed after midnight, much to the -discomfort of themselves and writing friends. Some of the passengers had great difficulty in obtaining accommodation at such an unreasonable hour, and several were seen after 1 a.m. in nil apparently hopeless quest for lodging. It is only fnir to the company to point out that tlio circumstances could not have been foreseen, and that otherwise the wishes of the Harbor Board not to embark or disembark passengers at such a late hour would probably have been respected. As the agent remarked, “There are two sides to every question.”
