In the Supreme Court John Desmond, at present serving a sentence, was sentenced to an additional 12 months for forgery and uttering. Albert- Roberts, aged 21, for theft of jewellery from a dwelling, was sentenced to three years’ hard labor, the Judge saying this offenco must be put down. The' attention of the Hon. J. A. Millar has beon drawn by Wellington coal dealers to the faot that the State Coal Department has been delivering coal on tho statutory lialfliolidays, whereon they are bound by tho Arbitration Court-and tho Act to observe a weekly half-holiday, Saturday being tlie day selected. .In reply, the Minister forwards a letter to Mr. Prior, secretary of the Dealers’ Association, from the Hon, Mr. J. McGowan, in which it is stated that inquiries have been made into the complaint, and he continues: “I have to state that I find that the carts were used on Saturday, September 14, under great pressure from, families in which sickness prevailed, local supplies having run short owing to bad weather on tho West Coast. A young, man named James JYLC,Allion was charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with having discharged a. loaded revolver at a laborer named Thomas Smith. Ho was remanded till tho 16th inst. It is ■alleged Smith, who lives in Wing-field-street, heard men arguing in front of his house and went outside to ask them to leave. As ho turned to re-enter tho house McAtlion is stated to have fired two shots at him, hut neither hit him. Tfie men in front made a row, and the -police came up land arrested them. One was drunk and was fined for drunkenness this morning.
