September 9th. The Haupiri had a bit of bad luck to lose one of her men at Te Araroa, anil I may say so far the body has not been recovered ; also in losing her launch off Port Awnnui. How that occureil we don’t know for the weather was moderate.
; Tho Kaoo was here all day Thursday discharging timber and general cargo. She left for AVaipiro Bay on Friday morning about 7 o’clock taking a native passenger to the hospital.
On Aionday evening a native crossing the AVaiapu at Tiki Tiki had a narrow escape from drowning, but being a good swimmer got ashore, though his pack-horse was drowned, and tlie horse he was riding got out on the opposite side of the river. On Tuesday a man named Latchlord, working for Air. O’Ryan, in attempting to cross was drowned. His horse got out with the saddle under his belly, but nothing has been found of Latch ford except his hat', though Constable Mellsop and several Maoris have dragged the river and been down both banks looking for signs. Influenza is very prevalent on tlie Coast and several natives are ill anil dying. The, last, a well-known halfcaste settler named Holiepa (Joe) Alarcimnt, died this morning.
