HOCKEY.

The men’s representative match, Poverty Bay v. Hawke’s Bay, to be played on No. 1 ground at Victoria Domain to-morrow afternoon is exciting a lot of interest in hockey circles, and a large attendance is expected to witness the matches.

CLIVE LADIES’ TEAM. At the Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon the Clive ladies met the Gisborne ladies and were defeated after a hard-fought game by two goals to nil. The teams took the field as follows :—Clive —Goal-keeper, M. Peterson ; full-backs, N. Lord and H. Harrison (captain); halves, A. Bissell, C. Greaves and H. Neilson; forwards, D. Brady, K. Crowley,'K. Brady, B. Harrison, D. Taylor. Gisborne—Goal-keeper, F. Sawyer; full-badks, H. Woodbine-Johnson and Iv., Sherratt; halves, E. Matthews, Y. Sherratt, W. Reynolds (captain); forwards, L. Matthews, A. Sherratt, J. Goffe, M. Wachsman, and B. Goffe. Miss H. Harrison won the toss from Miss W. Reynolds and elected to defend the Western goal. From the bully-off the home team attacked, Misses Matthews, Goffe and BVachsmau taking the play into the visitors’ quarters. Miss Harrison relieved with a good drive and Bliss D. Taylor, with a fine dribbling rush, transferred play for a time to the other end of the field. • Bliss Wood-bine-Johnson gained possession, and passing neatly initiated a splendid rush which carried the ball into the visitors’ circle, where, despite the splendid defensive play of the Clive back division. Bliss Ivy Goffe landed a neat- goal. After some hard play in neutral territory the whistle sounded half-time.

Upon resuming tlie visitors assumed the aggressive and for a time menaced the homo circle. The fullbacks, Misses Johnson and Sherratt and the goalkeeper, Miss Sawyer, were equal to the occasion and proven tell any score being recorded. Miss 1). Taylor, one of the Clive wing forwards, was attacking with great vigor and on two or three occasions carried the ball right up to tlie home team’s goal-posts, only to see it driven back again by the loeal backs. From a fine passing rush by the home forwards Miss U. Matthews drove the ball into the Clive circle and Miss Amy Sherratt guided it neatly into the net registering Gisborne’s second goal. The Clive ladies made some splendid efforts to equalise the scores, but the home defence was too sound and the game ended, Gisborne 2 goals, Clive nil.

The game was controlled by Mr. E. H. Pavitt who gave entire satisfaction, Messrs. D. Taylor and J. Doyle held' the line-flags. This afternoon the team will meet the Gisborne B team on Victoria Domain. and an interesting game is au-

Tho following hockey team has boon chosen to play against Poverty Bay at Gisborne on Saturday:—Goal, Howellfull-backs, Folly and Bisson ; halves, McGoldrick, Harris ami'll. Shirley; forwnrds, AVellmm, Dalgloisli, Shattky, Honle and Pnsloy; i‘mcrpolicies, Minojoe and Thompson. The team will leave by to-morrow’s boat and roturn on Mondny. The team is a fairly representative ono. Howell, Folly, McGoldrick, AVolham, Shattky and Henlo all’ took part;ill the match yostorday against AVanganui and also played ngnmst Manawatu and tiro the best men wo have in their positions. Bisson, Dalgleish and Phsley are very little if anything remoyocl from our very best form. Harris is a useful back. E. Shirloy, who. is chosen to play half, has been playing in tho forward ranks all tlio season, but ho knows tho gnino 60 well and adapts himself to any position so quickly that ho should hold his own amongst tho halves.

AVELLINGTON AND AVAIRARAPA LADIES.

Press Association. MASTERTON, August 29. A hockey match was played at Greytown to-day between tho Kiwi Ladies’ Club, champions of AVellmgton, and Kia Toa, champions of AVairarapn, and resulted in a draw, though Kia Toa had’ the better ol the game.
