was sentenced to nine months and Daniel Callaghan to 12 months 'imprisonment for broaching cargo. In tho case of Jns. Wright Campbell, 67 years of ago, against whom there were several charges of theft, etc., sentence was suspended to enable His Honor to consider what was best to uc done. A charge of inflicting grovious bodily harm against. James Russell was under consideration when tho Court roso. Other charges on tho Ist are arson against Thomas Miller an i tii. r o against John MacMillan.

WELLINGTON, August 19., At the civil sittings of tho Supro no Ci urt to-day Michaol lice Domuth, clerk of Wellington, claimed £3OO dan ages from S’t. George A. Down ig, ihs-s in tho Land and Income I’ax Department, Wellington, for libel and slander. It was asserted that last December defendant told ono William. Lingard that his (defendant’s) daughter, aged 16, had been takon from tho custody of hor parents and induced by plaintitf to enter into clandestine correspondence and otherwise reb “1 against the authority of hor parents. Defendant asked that plaintiff 1)0 dismissed from tho employ of Lingo id and Co. Defendant also wrote to Lingard and Co. saying lie intended taking criminal proceedings against 1 <r intiff. The Court awarded d images with costs on tho lowest scale.

At the Supreme Court to-day Joseph Norman, in whose caso the' jury disagreed last Friday, was convicted of an unnatural offence and sentenced to 2 yenrs imprisonment. William Jewett Hirst, who was convicted of perjury last week, was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment. Charles Dunn and Frank Morrow were charged with wounding ono Gronberg with intent to do bodily harm. Dunn was found not guilty. Morrow was found guilty of common assault and romanded till the morning for sentence.
