CHARITABLE AID MATTERS.
Press Association. DUNEDIN, August 15. At a meeting of tlio Charitable Aid Board to-da.y tho question of contributions to private benevolent' institutions or schools was considered. The Anglican denomination made an application for a contribution towards St. .Mary’s Orphanage and one of the members of the Board claimed some consideration for tho Presbyterian Orphanage. Members of the Board generally considered these benevolent institutions were as much entitled to assistance as the Vincent de Paul Home, a denominational institution at- Nelson. The Board’-s solicitors advised that this assistance could onh he given to gazetted institutions which are recognised as industrial schools. The Board could, however, take over the orphanage under section 31 of the Act-. It was resolved that tho Board recommend the Government to place St. Alary’s Orphanage on the list of schools receiving grants, this recomniendation to apply to all denominational schools doing work of an equally benevolent character. The Board also deckled to state a case for decision in the Supreme Court as to whether the Benevolent Trustees or the District Charitable Aid Board has control of the distribution of charitable aid in the district.
