THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.
DUTY ON MACHINERY OBJECTED TO. A SHIPPING SUBSIDY ASKED FOR. Pross Association. WELLINGTON, August 5. A deputation representing tho dairying industry told tho Premier this afternoon that tho prospect of a duty on dairying machinery was not received favorably by tho industry. It was pointed out that the preferential duty had boon imposed on such machinery from foreign countries, though none came from Britain. The now duty would add about £9 to the cost of factory separators, which now cost about £97 to land. Replying, Sir Joseph Ward said there had not boon any increase in the duty on dairying machinery, though certain machines had been placed on the preferential list. He pointed out that eleven-twelfths of New Zealand’s export of dairy produce went to tho United Kingdom. The Government had taken this into consideration, and tried to show that Now Zealand appreciated the position. Sir Joseph Wa rd promised to consider tho request by tho deputation -hat tho Government should subsidise to an extent of one-eighth of a penny per lb shipping companies carrying butter to South Africa.
