. -Press Association. . WELLINGTON, August 5. The following transfers are announced consequent on the promotion of D. Gumming, Inspector of Post Offices, to be Controller and Accountant. G. B. Dali, at present assistant insneotor of post offices in the Central'District, becomes inspector: and J. K. Stevens, now postmaster at Ha were, nvill take the position of .assistant inspector. ■ Before Mr. Riddell, &.M., Emily Woiss, whose retail wine license was recently determined, was charged with having sold wine to three police probationers. The defence mainly rested on the contention that Mrs. Weiss had handed the retail part oi her business over to her son, Frederick Weiss. Judgment was reserved. A similar charge against Frederick Weiss was preferred, a remand being granted till judgment is given m respect of the charge against his mother, counsel stating that the line o* •defence would be governed by tho decision in that case. The following Intelligence officer: have been appointed bv the Military Intelligence Department to assist ni gathering information in the respec five districts concerning questions ol defence:— Wellington, Capt. At tho Criminal Court, W llhan Anderson, alias George, alias Mil iinZ. was sentenced to two yean imprisonment for forgery and utter ing Andrew Lund for theft fron a dwelling in three counts got , vears. Walter Mark Kenny, with r jone list of convictions, extending over 17 years, was sentenced to years for theft from the person. Bernhardt Munter, a young man convicted of forgery and uttering, pleaded for leniency and was sentenced to six months imprisonment Harry'Marshall, alias Henry Fraser Marshall, with a number of previou. convictions for various crimes, war sentenced-to two years for theft of . bicycle. Reginald Henry Dempsey, for forgery and uttering, was sentenced .to six months. Andrew Douglas Bremner, who had pleaded guilty to horse stealing at- Drury, on two charges, and who was only 17 years of ate at the time of tho offence was sentenced to four months. The Mayor, Mr. A. Myers, has sent tho following cable to Webb: — “Citizens of Auckland proud of New Zealander’s victory, and send you heartiest congratulations.” .The Mayor has a message congratulating the New Zealand footballers on their splendid victory.
