CANTERBURY FARMERS BEFORE ARBITRATION COURT.

HUNDREDS APPEAR TO FACE UNION DEMANDS. ACTION DEFERRED.

Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. Tho Canterbury Farm Laborers’ application for an award came before lie Arbitration Court this morning. Over 700 farmers from all parts of Canterbury were cited, and so many sttended that the Court room was crowded out, and the doors had to be locked to prevent ingress of additionll defendants. W. Jones, president of the North Canterbury branch of the Farmors’ Union, in the course of a lengthy argument contended that there was actually no dispute between tho farm workers and the employers, and that die case had been brought prematurely. The Court reserved its decision on die question as to whether a dispute ictually existed or not, and the Pre■idsnt stated that if it were held that .lie case was properly before the Court the whole matter would be referred by the Court to tlio Conciliation Board for investigation and report. T. Teschemaker, who represented die Canterbury Shipowners’ Union, mmplained that his union had been brought before the' Court on matters shat did not affect them.
