ATHLETICS
An Auckland writer says: —Professional athletics are still flourishing, the meetings_being held every Wednesday evening by the Auckland Athletic Club at its grounds near New- ' market. On an average, there are nearly 200 competitors weekly. One of tho features of the gathering these past two weeks is an electric judging, machine, which registers tho winner.to an inch. It is in five compartments, there being five tracks. Above ' each is an electric lamp, which lights dirc-ctlv the winner breasts the tape, the first winner’s lamp only lighting, excepting in the case of a dead heat, when both lamps will light. Besides die lamps on the machines there are others connected on the blackboard •which gives the names of the runners . in each heat, and the lamp over the winner’s name lights simultaneously with those on the judging machine. This machine has not yet erred, and is giving universal satisfaction. It is the invention of a young Aucklander, Sidney Leeky, nineteen years of age. He is tlie oldest son -of J. G Lecky, who many years ago was jug of our best forwards on the Rugby field, and was a member of the first New Zealand team which visited Australia in 1883. In conversation •with Rufe Naylor, who has had considerable experience with these machines in Australia, lie informed me that this machine was the most per‘tect one lie had ever seen. There are other judging machines ill Australia, i it they seldom register thirty heats without going wrong. The machine, invented by young Lecky will register heats all night, without the slightest fear of error. It is intended to have the machine protected.
