OUR RAILWAY.
A NAPIER VIEW. In an article dealing with Auckland claims as put forth at the Chamber of Commerce banquet, the “Hawke's Hay Herald” says:—“The Auckland members are greatly interested in railway exteution. That is ji very proper thing. We agree with.them in desiring to see the North Alain Trunk line put through, although : t will not benefit us directly. Other of their schemes seem to us not so necessary. Among these is the Auek Hnd-Gishorne railway. We suppose that the day has come when we ma.v be,said to have ceased-Oo have any claim to consideration iii the matter AVe were once largely interested in tie tnide of the Gisborne district, and bad we early struggled for closer communication we might have sue cccded in retaining our interest. \\ r o allowed it to slip out of our hands, and now Auckland is moving heaven and earth to secure flu 1 plums. According to the programme of tlrn Auckland Chamber of Commerce ‘strenuous efforts should be have Auckland connected with Gisborne. This line would open .up : large and fertile country, and as tbs trade of Gisborne and district wa: Auckland’s birt bright, Auckland should use. every indcavour to be brought into closer touch with it. This is a new aspect of the question which has not struck us before, hot we do not think that Auckland would recognise any southern limit to sphere of influence short of Cook Strait. In the same way we shall shortly find AVairoa annexed by the strenuous traders of the North.”
