PRISON ESCAPEES.
A TERRIBLE TRAMP. ’Press ’Association. CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday. ’ Delaney' and Gibbons, two prisoners who' escaped from Hokitika gaol last Tuesday, arid were captured at Lake Coleridge on Saturday evening, wore brought beforo Mr. Day, S.M., to-day. and remanded to Hokitika. Their tramp across the ranges must have been a terrible experience. It was bitterly cold weather, and they had insufficient clothing, little or no food, and had to frequently ford icecold rivers, only to be, to tlieir surprise, arrested at the last place where the police were expected to bo. The men had procured outside clothing to-replace the prison garb, but retained the gaol underclothing. They stoutly denied their identity when arrested, but the underclothing gave them away. The men had virtually been travelling a da*- and a flight from their escape to their lodgrriorit in the lock-up.
