A VIOLENT EXPLOSION.
Press Association. / AUCKLAND, Thursday. A loud explosion in Wellesley street east just before 10 o’clock yesterday morning considerably startled people in that vicinity. A sound of breaking glass showed that the incident occurred in D. and J. Miller s plumbum establishments opposite the City Council Chambers. So loud was the noise that those in the Council office ran out in baste to ascertain : tlie cause. The explanation was that a benzine tank sent for repairs had exploded under somewhat singular circumstances. The tank bad been placed on trestles, and rested on its side, and two taps were open ns well as r. vent in one end. Mr. T. Leaning started t'o do some soldering to tlio other end (really tlio bottom),, but had scarcely applied the beat op I ore there was a loud explosion, which resulted in his being knocked over and bruised, but fortunately not seriously hurt’. So violent was the explosion that the other end of the tank was blown out, and the compressed air m the room escaped by bursting the glass at the top of the partition, and also blowing out- the upper windows of the shop front. Mr. Leaning was sure there was no benzine in the tank.
