Some time age there was an dgita tioi for the acquirement of land at Miller’s Elat for building sites and a sn ail settlement. At a public meeting a resolution was carried that the Government be asked to acquire 500 acres of land to meet requirements. The Alinister of Lands deputed two members of the Land Board to visit the district to enquire fully into the intensity of the “land huuger,” and to make arraifgements, if deemed exledient, for file acquiiemeut- of a flock to meet bo demands. Arrangements were made with oue landowner at £4O an acre for 20 acres. This it was proposed to cut up into cuarteraere sections at £l2 10s per section, and all those who had cxxiressed a desire to take up sections were advised of the opportunity. Only two residents made application, and all tlu rest declined, as they regarded the values as excessive. After a lapse of three or four months, the Lands Department has advised Air. F. Daw, chairman of tho local committee, that tho Government do not intend to take any further steps in procuring land at Aliller’s Flat for township sites. CARTERTON, yesterday.
