COUNTY COUNCIL OFFICES.
NEW BUILDING DECIDED ON.
SITE IN CHILDERS ROAD TO BE BOUGHT.
The matter of acquiring, new offices for the Cook County Council was dealt with at tlie meeting of tho Council yesterday. Mr. Geo Lysnar advised that he was electing premises on sections 142 and 143 on Read’s Quay and could make arrangements for County Council Chambers for about £lO4 jier annum, the Council to pay rates 'and taxes. The Chairman thought more particulars were needed. Mr. Lysnar would give a lease for a term of years. This was rather vague. That may not be a great improvement and less rent was paid at present. There was an offer for £IBSO, 33j ft. frontage next the Poverty Bay Club. Tho Clerk said they were willing to increase tlie frontage to 36ft. There was an. offer of a section in Childers Road. The building would cost £llOO, less sale of buildings to be removed, say £75 —£3085. The rent would be £62 16s, leaving £lO7 2 3 6d, net rental. An acre facing Grey and Derby streets, 2 chains frontage to each street, price £IBOO. It was stated that the latter building was not suitable as it was rather dark. Cr. Kenway asked what it would cost to make the Choral Hall suitable. The Clerk replied that it would be £3OO. Cr. Matthew's suggested that there were some sections adjoining the Hall. The Chairman estimated they should get good offices there for £IOOO. Cr. White said there was a possible lease of the Borough Council near the Whataupoko Bridge. Cr. Matthews .said that Mr. Bushnell had the place lately occupied by S. T. Stanton; the cost would be about £IBOO.
J. Peckover and Co. wrote submitting 2i acres, sections 80 and 81, having a frontage of 132 ft. to Bright street and 165 ft. to Childers Road. Four houses are erected oil it, producing an income of about £2 11s per week. For the quarter-acre adjoining on Childers road, 66 x 105, £2OOO is required, so that the price for the 4-acre, £2050 was reasonable for cash. Cr. Kenway proposed that McGowan’s Childers road site be accepted. Cr. Matthews seconded the motion. Cr. White considered more ground to be necessary. " , The Clerk thought it was some distance for the ratepayers The opinion was expressed that the building might not bring £2OO. Cr. Sherratt said it would cost about £2700 to complete. The Council adjourned to view the property, and upon their return, decidecl to accept.it.
