During the early hours of /Monday morning a fire broke out in a fourroomed cottage at Ormond, owned and occupied by Mrs. Hird. The occupant was alone in tlie bouse at tlio time, and her “down” upon rats was the indirect cause of the loss of hearth and home. She had loft a lamp burning in tlie bedroom, and hearing the scuttling of tlioso troublesome pests in the room, she essayed to throw some article to scare them away. Her aim was erratic, and tlio lamp was overturned. The burning oil soon had tho place in flames, and tho owner, having barely time to collect a few articles of attire, was unable to save any of the household effects. The building was insured for £IOO with the Imperial Office, and tlie Phoenix Office held a risk of £IOO on the furniture and £25 on the piano.
