Mr. W. G. Fraser, who recently resigned the post of managoi* of the Uuion S.S. Co. in order to enter into business in Wellington, leaves to-morrow on a trip to* the South Sea Islands. This afternoon a presentation will bo made to Mr. Fraser by local business people. Mr. R. Newing, second officer of the s.s. Takapuna, was at a gathering of Wellington citizens presented with a medal from the Italian Government for bravery in rescuing the crew of the fishing launch Napoli off Palliser Bay. _ The death is announced from London of Mr. G. H. Finch, M.P. (for Rutland, aged 72. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin states that Captain William Nathanial Chambers died at Ins residence, Hden-strcet, yesteiday. Few men were better known in Dunedin in maritime circles than tho late Captain Chambers and few had a longer or more eventful record of service on the sea. The deceased was born at Great Yormouth in 1824 and entered the Royal Navy in 1836, joining 11.M.5. Howe; and after a year’s service as boy, was transferred to H.M.S. Britannia, the guard and training ship at Portmouth, on which lie served for 16 months. He was then shifted to H.M.S. Edinburgh and became part of Admiral Stopford’s squadron, "which bombarded and took Beiront and St. Jean Dacre in 1839. ■ In these actions young Chambers took part. He was paid off in 1843 and passed into the merchant service. He subsequently emigrated to Victoria, in 1852. For some years he carried on a lightering and waterman’s business at Sandridge and subsequently came on to Port Chalmers in 1861, and was engaged in the coastal trade. In yachting circles Captain Chambers was also well known. - The deceased leaves a widow and four daughters.
