A. VISITOR FROM JAVA

A welcome mooting was given at tho Salvation Army Barracks last ovoning to Major Glover, wlio is visiting Gisborne for tlio first time. The meeting started ill the open air, whore Adjutant Dickens introduced Major Glover to. the people of Gisborne in a fitting speech. Major Glovor replied, and an invitation was given to all to go to the Barracks. When the Barracks were reached a good number of people availed themselves of the kind invitation, and entered the building.

Adjutant Dickens again introduced the Major in his well-known hearty manner, and after one or two hyir.tis were sung Major Glover addressed the meeting. He won the hearts of all present by his straightforward and hearty manner, and convulsed the audience by singing and endeavoring to make the audience sing a chorus in Javanese. Major* Glover has been in charge of the Salvation Army in Java for a number of years, and has learned to speak their language. The Army in Java has .the sympathy of the Governor-General and of all the Government officials, and also of the native chiefs.

Major Glover has been at the work in Canada and in Australia.) Ho is now interested in the social work of the Army, and also in writing for its periodicals. During the meeting Major Glover read out a letter of thanks from his Excellency the Governor to the members of the Salvation Army in Gisborne for tho address of welcome with which they presented him. The Major will probably leave for South by next Wednesday’s boat. On Monday night he will give an address on tho social work of the Salvation Army.
