A cable rccoived by the ActingPremier states that before leaving London Sir Joseph Ward arranged with a number of New Zealanders to have a memorial tablet to Mr. Seddon erected in St. Paul’s. Tho whole will be done by voluntary subscriptions.
Miss Joannic Hunter, one of New Zealand’s fow lady telegraphists, who has been located in the Auckland chief telegraph office for the past twelve years, has resigned the service in order to be married. A Press Association tolegram from Wellington states that the ActingPremier received a cablegram from Sir Joseph Ward stating that he had selected Major Inson for appointment as Adjutant-General of the Council of Defence. He arrives in New Zealand in July. A private cablegram from Mclbourne received in ’Wellington states that the opening performance of Madame Teresa Carreno, tho renownsd pianist, was a brilliant success, and was only exceeded by tho memorable welcome accorded to Melba. Mr. Balard, officer in charge of telegraphs at 'Dunedin, takes charge at Auckland for three months. A Press Association telegram from London records the death at the age of 67 of Sir Benjamin Baker, who was consulting engineer for the work of building the Nile reservoir. On Thursday Sorgeant Williams will take chargo of the Gisborne police force, after)having:been absent for several months on sick leave. A Press Association telegram from London notifios the death of Mr- E. H. Conger, formerly Amorican minister at Pekin, aged 65.
