ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Press Association. AUCKLAND, last night. Joseph Thomas, who attempted to board a moving tram this morning, was thrown violently to tho road, and sustained a contused wound on the head, concussion, and a lacerated hand.

FATAL TRAP COLLISION. CHRISTCHURCH, last night.

At half-past 9 last evening the police ivoro informed that a collision had occurred at Halswell between a trap and a traction engine, a man being seriously injured, and that medical aid was needed. An ambulance was at once sent out with a doctor. It was found that a few hundred yards beyond the Halswell Hotel Henry Amelins Conventry FerJguson had been driving home in a four-wheeled express, accompanied by his groom, a man named Edwin, when they collided with a traction engine, standing about a dozen yards from the side of the road. The hpj-se swerved and threw Eerguson, who was driving, out of the express, his head striking the engine, The horse was unhurt. The groom was only shaken slightly, but Ferguson’s injuries were serious. He was attended by Hr. Symes, and a start was made for the Christchurch Hospital, but the man expired on the way, rfnd the body was removed to the rporgue. The night was very dark and foggy. Ferguson was well known hi South Canterbury.

At the inquest evidence was given that the engine was drawn up clear to the fence and out of the path of traffic, and that lights were shown both fore and aft. TKo deceased and his groom visited the Halswell Hotel shortly before the accident, hut the licensee refused to serve them, for the reason that they were under the influence of liquor. The inquest was adjourned so that the evidence of the groom might be procured:
