The minors Tn several Rand mines h,ive struck against an attempt to compel the men to work three machines instead of two. The strike is developing into serious proportions. DOCK HANDS GO OUT. NEW YORK. May 8. Ten thousand dockers in New York have struck for a rise in wages, seriously affecting the running of the Atlantic liners.
F.-ess Association. AUCKLAND TRAM WORKERS. AUCKLAND, last night. AY lien the Arbitration Court resumed hearing the Tramway Company’s application for a new award, Mr. Chamberlain, engineer for the Christchurch Tramways, said too little was allowed for depreciation on New Zealand tramways. If the right amount was allowed for depreciation in Christchurch the profits would he nil. A safe margin was 6 to 7} per cent., instead of the prevailing 31 per pent. Mr. Scott, the employers’ representative, said he noticed a repudiation of his statements regarding the Wellington tramway by the Mayor of AVellington; but he would repeat that when the agreement was brought into force it put £6OOO per annum on the running expenses, when the system was not paying. He would repeat that this was done for political purposes. The employers, said Mr. Scott, were becoming alarmed at bringing in matters outside the Act and only waiting an opportunity to bring a test case forward. Respecting glass fronts, the Company was prepared
to rnnko experiments of putting them on now cars in future. Mr. Rosser submitted that the Court had jurisdiction in regard to the special privileges claimed by tho men. Their demands wore modelled on tho so-called political agreement in 'Wellington, lie contended that, if Ihe Wellington men wore entitled to higher wages tho Auckland men were even more so, their work being much harder, tho grades being steeper and tho brake work heavier, 110 submitted that tho spare list should be limited. , Tho Court reserovd decision.
