Press Association.—Copyright. SMELTERS STRIKE ENDED. HOBART, May 1. The smelters strike has ended, the strikers resuming work. Press Association. BREACH OE TAILORING AWARD AUCKLAND, yesterday. An interesting judgment affecting the tailoring 'trade was given in the Arbitration Court to-day, when Rushbrook and Bridgman, E. Moore, and •J. R. Self, drapers, were fined £5, with costs, for a breach of a clause of the tailors 1 award, which providesthat all bespoke work shall be done in the shop of the employer who' takes' measurements, and that suits sold as tailor-made should be* regarded as bespoke. Respondents took measurements for suits, which were made in a factory, though the Court held on the evidence that the customers wero not told the suits were not tailor-made.' Similar charges against -John and George Court, drapers, were dismissed, the evidence showing the customers were told the suits were chart made and could not be* 1 fitted.
SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY. INVERCARGILL, yesterday. In reply to representations by Mr Hanan re tho Saturday, half-holiday, Mr. Millar said: “I am simply carrying out the law. Having strictly enforced both the Arbitration and Shops Act, it is imperative to see the Factories Act observed, especially seeing tho matter had been officially brought under the notice of the Department.” Parliament, lie added, would meet next month, when an amendment might be made, but in tho meantime he intended to strictly enforce the law. DUNEDIN, last night. The Otago Trades and Labor Council at its meeting this evening passed the following resolution: “That this Council strongly supports the Hon. ,T. A. Millar, .Minister for Labor, in his endeavor to uphold the law in reference to the half-holiday provided for in tlic Factories Act.” TRAM COMPANY PROSECUTED. AUCKLAND, last night. The hearing of cases in which the Electric Tramway Co. and a number of their employees arc cited for breaches of award in connection with the late strike commenced this afternoon. The case against tho Company was taken first, and after being partly heard was adjourned till to-morrow.
