CORRESPONDENCE
THE BRICK AREA. To the Editor of ths Gisboi no Times. Sir,—lt is singular that the citizens of Gisborne have paid so little attention to the by-hnvs framed by the retiring Council that its action with regard to the brick area lias scarcely been commented upon. The only interpretation which one may place upon this silence is that the burgesses have reserved the expression of their disapproval for the ballot box, and it is to be hoped that it will lie none the loss emphatic, so that Councillors who have the colossal impudence to consider their own private interests or desires before that of the Borough while on the Council will ho relegated to a sphere where they may devote their undivided attencion to their private affairs. The fact that Cl's. Lysnar and Harding have the audacity to again become candidates for civic positions after being parties to what for charity’s sake we may call a “mistake” indicates a blind faith on their part in either the forgetfulness or indifference of the burgesses. Perhaps they imagine that the general public are not aware that they are the owners of nearly all the properties in Lowe street and Read’s Quay, which wore so carefully dissected from the rest of the blocks which otherwise were included in the bridle area. Whatever tlieir reasons, their actions if judged fairly are absolutely indefensible, and certain feeble assertions that plans are out for brick buildings does not justify tlieir position. If one studies the plan of the Borough, the conclusion must, he arrived at that the exclusion from the brick area of the I’eel street and Childers road portion of Mr. Town ley’s block was agreed upon to give color to the other exemptions, as to a certain extent this was defensible owing to the nature of the residential premises within the block.—l am, etc., AY. LISSANT CLAYTON.
