RAILWAY FATALITY.

MAN RUN OVER AT TE KARAKA

A vory painful accident occurred on the railway lino on Saturday night, two miles on the Gisborne side of To Karaka, resulting in the death of a native.

As the late train from town emerged from the tunnel, the driver and fireman remarked that they' seemed to have passed over a loose joint on the rails, and when they arrived at Te Karaka they examined the wheels and discovered blood on them. The train returned and arrived at the spot twenty minutes after the accident, and the officials saw a Maori by the side of the line,groaning piteously. An examination of the man’s injuries showed that his head was cut, his left arm was torn terribly, and there was a large gaping wound ill the back.

, A supply of bandages, splint 6, etc., with printed instructions as to application, is carried in every guard’s van to meet such emergencies, and bandages were applied where possible. The poor fellow was perfectly conscious, and gave his name as Henare. All haste was made to Gisborne, hut as no doctor was available, the sufferer was taken in a cab to the hospital, where he arrived at one o’clock on Sunday morning. He died in the institution at 9 a.ill. the same day. It is stated that deceased was put off the train at Waipaoa for being drunk and unable to pay his fare.
