The lesolution was adopted. The Secretary to the Treasury wrote stating that tlu loan of £509 vas now available for metalling tla? road from Aroha station to Hangaroa read.
Engineer’s Report. The Engineer (Mr. Eraser) presented liis repoit, as follows: “Contract IG4.—Felling and clearing Maungahaumia: This work, which has lately been taken out of the hands of the contractor, has been let at a satisfactory figure, and is now in progress. Contract 105'. Depot metal: Several contractors for this work have been somewhat late in making a start with their carting, but I do not anticipate that the time will be exceeded for completion of contracts. Contract IGB.—Dismantling old bridge, Matawhero: Work completed, and carried out in a very satisfactory manner. Contract 16‘J. —Carting and breaking creek boulders, Waimata: All the carting is completed, and the knapping now in progress. As I understand some of the ford crossings on Perry’s creek have been made less easy, owing to the carting out of the boulders, it mav he advisable to expend a pound or two in reducing the approaches to an easier grade. Contract 170. Quarrying, spawling, and knapping stone, C. Gray’s quarry: Completed except as regards knapping. Contract 171.—Carting depot pietal, Waimata: Practically ‘ completed. Contract 174.—Carting and breaking stone for Makauri and Tatapouri: Progressing satisfactorily. Contract 176.—Reforming and metalling, Ngatapa, Quarry road: Fair progress is being made with this work. A considerable length of re-formation completed, and some short lengths of metalling. Contract 177.—Formation and drainage, Mildura, ivaiti: As satisfactory progress was not bein" made with this contract. 1 Imre intimated flip contractor to proceed with the work within. 7 days or it will ho 1 taken out of his hands, it being of the utmost importance that the formation should be pushed on and allowed to set before the winter. Contract 178.—Bridges and approaches, Mangatuna and —The contractor has ordered" the necessary timber and work will be proceeded with on arrival of same . “A number of other contracts lately let will shortly be under way.— With reference to Mr. Black’s application to harp certain formation executed at' Bakowah 1 have' arranged to get the work done at once.- —As regards Mr. Tullock’s letter re access at Muriwai, 1 have previously reported on this work, but since my last visit the main' drain bounding Mr. Tullock’s property has been thoroughly cleaned out, which would considerably reduce the previous estimate of work to be done. Should, there-, fore, the formation of the road past Robcke’s lie taken in hand and the side drain cleaned, good access would lie given to both Messrs. Tullock and Robcke. The work should, how-
ever, be put in hand at once if it is to bo utilised this winter. —On the upper Wannata road Mr. Branson is practically cut off to his property owing to portion of the formed road having completely slipped away. It may, therefore, be advisable to make a deviation through Mr. Straclian’s. I will, however,*' report more full}' next meeting,-— I The road on the Kaiti side of the Wgimata river, running past, ill', Tanslpy’s and giving access to Mr. McLean ,requires immediate attention, owing to a washout near the hank of the river. This work could host he done by forming about nine chains of easy ground and filling in flip washout with material obtained ; a.lso cutting a drain on upper side of road- The formed portion of tin's road would he much improved if the trees on Mr Cox’s pro poi'ty were felled on the eastern side, and some of the water tables cleaned.
“I have taken advantage of the olfe. rof Mr I l '. Lysnar to supply the homos for road machine, and a party is now jit work on the 'Tiniroto-Para-knnapa section. Mr White’s offer tc supjdy bullocks for another machine lias not yet been made use of, as ] :un uiiahlo to obtain the services of a second man to work the machine satisfactorily. I have, however arranged to send out plough and scoop, etc, and wil get the worst places put in order—also the fords levelled off and improved. Extra men have also been employed on the Gishorne-Morere and Nuhaka roads.—Road formation from 1-lauiti towards Takapau has been compleed, and excellent work done. I am also employing a horse and scoop on the new Putae deviation, and removing slips and rubble. The fencing of the Te Xvaraka cutting deviation will be iji bupd in a few days.” Or. Lysnar said the road referred to by Mr. Tulloch was in the district of the re Ai-ai Board, who had refused to take it over until cc rtain woi k wa,s done. Tiie Ohariman : In that ca.se it is i pzivate road, Cr. Harding made an explanation bo the Council, and said if the 3£ii/.incer would give an estimate of the jest he would move that the work be 'tone.
. Matthews opposed spending moroy on the road, because it vns a private lead. Tiia bhigiiicer said the formation •:.f ihe road would about CuO, md tlie clearing out of tlie drai i would cost £lO. Cr. Matthews said that if the Council uould take over the road V Mould offer no objection to spending .coney on the road. Or.' Kcinvay suggested that the Council should take the road over. Cr. Matthews said that the limits of the To Aral district should be looked up, and il it Mas found that the road was not in that urea the Ccrncil should take ever the ioad. After some further discussion, Cr. Matthews: M.v proposition is that tlie proper steps he adopted to take over tlie road. Cr. Harding said the place was a very bad one, and the work should be done at once. The Chairman said tl ere were huntdreds of private roads. They should see whether it was a private road, and that there should be torniation and means for water getting
Cr. Matthews accepted the Chairman’s proposal as an addition to his motion. The Chairman, in reply to a member, said there was no evidence before them that the road had ever been taken over by the To Arai authority. If it had not been taken over it was simply a County private road. Cr. Boland: And we may in that case take it over. Cr. White said that they might, if they chose, close one road and open iu "::aurv'fiyb it'uujumra r iru iv~ ; .
