GISBORNE DEBATING SOCIETY.

A general meeting of the Gisborne Debating Society was held last night, at which there was a full attendance, and Mr. J. A. Connell was voted to the chair. The business of the meeting was to revise and adopt the draft rules submitted by the sub-committee and elect office-bearers. The rules were gone through seriatim. amended and finally adapted. The election of officers resulted as follows : —President, Mr. J. A. Connell; vice-presidents, Dr. Collins and Rev. Dawson Thomas; secretary and treasurer, Mr. McLean; committee, Messrs. G. Darton, R. Johnston, G. Wade, Cox, and A. W. Dally. It was decided to open the season with a conversazione, comprising an address from the president, and a musical programme, admission to be by ticket only, each member to have the privilege of distributing two free tickets. Arrangements to be left in the hands of tlie committee. The committee appointed to draw up a syllabus for the year reported that it had not yet concluded its labors, but would report at next meeting. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded a pleasant and successful meeting.
