Bookmakers Punished.
PRESS ASSOCIATION Christchurch, yesterday. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day' a number of bookmakers were charged with trespass on the Christchurch racecourse and refusing to quit when ordered to do so. John Smith was sentenced to one month on each of three charges, and W.
Blood to one month on each of four. E. J. Marsdcn pleaded guilty to four charges. Counsel said Marsdcn had paid £SO in lines already and been sentenced to two
months in default of a fine of £25, Accused had no criminal proclivities outside
this fault. The Bench said there was no excuse for the man not taking heed of previous punishments. He was sentenced to two months on each charge, the term to bo concurrent. Geo. Driver and J. Seatreo were fined £lO cash and costs. Alfred Drake, a first offender, was fined 40s and costs. James Matson, A. Butler, S,
Isaacs, and William Barry were fined £5 each and costs. J. Cuthbcrton was sent to gaol for 14 days on each of four charges, John Ross, another bookmaker, was fined £lO. Other cases were dismissed,
