THIEVES.
PRESS ASSOCIATION Christchurch, last night. About 2.30 yesterday morning a boarder at the Royal Hotel was somewhat startled by hearing a noise in his room, and on investigating lie found a man near his bed, searching his pockets. 'The burglar, as soon as ho noticed that lie had been seen, bolted out of the door and along tho passage to the fire escape at the end of the building, with the boarder in hot pursuit. The latter was unable overtake his quarry, however, before he descended tho ladder and made good his escape. It is stated that this was not the only room entered, as another gentleman staying at the hotel was relieved of 212 10s.
The Star Hotel was also visited by some of the light fingered fraternity, and tho rooms occupied by a number of boarders were entered and anything at all valuable stolen.
